Subject: Recommendation for Captain Alan Alexander and Chesapeake Yacht Services.
Submitted by: EJ Meier, owner of the vessel, “Knot Complaining”.
This recommendation encompasses three areas: Yacht Relocation, Yacht Management and Yacht Training.
Context: Knot Complaining is a 42’ Maxum SCA 4100 with twin Cummins 6BTA engines, galley, salon, 2 staterooms and 2 full heads. I was introduced to Captain Alan a little over one year ago and he has performed services in each of the areas outlined above.
Yacht Relocation: Captain Alan has performed 2 relocation services for us over the course of the last year. After we purchased the boat in May of 2022 we moved it from Gloucester, VA to Burgess, VA in September of 2022 to leave it with an outfitter for renovations and updates. In July of 2023, we moved the vessel to it’s current location in Norfolk, VA. Both trips were about 5 hours in length. Captain Alan was well prepared, the maps were routed and pre-trip procedures were completed. We were on time and accident and incident free. On the trip from Burgess to Norfolk we encountered a potential issue that was handled and managed expertly with multiple options presented as back up plans. We continued to diagnose the issue and found a rather minor issue causing a pretty good leak and we were able to fix it and move on. Constant concern and attention for the safety of those onboard and the vessel itself are always demonstrated front and center.
Yacht Management: Captain Alan, provides a cost effective and diligent yacht management program. We are remote owners and are away from the vessel at times and count on Captain Alan and his team to keep a close eye on the vessel in our absence. In addition to typical yacht management supervision activities, Captain Alan has excellent knowledge of mechanical, electrical, fresh water and waste water systems on the boat as well as great knowledge of general maintenance issues required to manage a large vessel like this that is out in the elements. He is hands on and does much of the work himself, or coaches me through work that needs to be done. I have saved thousands of dollars being able to do work myself, or having Captain Alan doing it versus calling a specialist or taking the vessel to a marina for issues we can repair ourselves. Captain Alan is very well connected in the area and can help locate specialists when needed that are vetted and are top notch.
Training: We have utilized Captain Alan to help with training for on the water, and dockside training for things as basic as knots, systems usage, boat preparation, line preparation, etc. We have not had an opportunity to do a lot of close maneuver training yet and that is an area we plan to work on in future months with this boat. There are no issues with that, really just a matter of availability of the boat and the time to accomplish that training. Captain Alan is very hands on with his training, his open water training and knowledge of radar, weather, water, navigation is fantastic on the open water. He is open and willing to share from his incredible experiences.
I am pleased to call Captain Alan a friend and colleague in the boating community. He has been an incredible resource for us during the preparation and planning for this next adventure in our life. His mission is to get us ready to start America’s Great Loop in 2024!

Captain Alan has been managing our yacht for some time now and has been nothing short of excellent to deal with.
Captain Alan is a true professional in every sense of the word. He is knowledgeable, reliable, and always goes beyond to ensure that our yacht is in top condition. His attention to detail and commitment to providing the highest level of service is impressive.
We used his services in assisting with the delivery of our Selene 53 from Stuart, FL to Norfolk, VA. During our six-day passage, we went offshore for four consecutive days, and Captain Alan was able to navigate through rough waters and keep us safe. We even caught a couple Mahi-Mahi along the way. I would not hesitate to use Captain Alan for any future yacht deliveries.
He has been instrumental in training me and my wife to operate our yacht. Captain Alan is an excellent teacher and mentor throughout the entire process. One of the things that sets Captain Alan apart is his ability to interact with our entire family, including our young grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
